Synthconscious is a 3D animated short film created as a semester project in the Digital Arts program at FH Oberösterreich, Campus Hagenberg. It follows a synthetic war machine that gradually becomes self-aware, confronting the limits of its own programming as it begins to question its purpose, and what it means to be sentient at all.

Synthconscious: the film. A fallen war machine, left for dead on a battlefield, is slowly drawn back to life not by repair, but by the small, fragile things growing around it.

A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Synthconscious, from early story development and character modeling to animation, sound design and final rendering, along with the collaborative workflow and challenges of a three-person production.

Synthconscious was submitted to and accepted into the Best Austrian Animation Festival (BAAF) in Vienna, where it screened as part of the official selection. It didn't win an award, but presenting the film to a festival audience, together with the rest of the team, was the moment that mattered.

The film opens in the middle of a war already lost: smoke, fire and the shadows of marching soldiers setting the stage before the protagonist is struck down.

The protagonist, motionless in the dust: the moment its power finally runs out, and the story's long stillness begins.

Days pass in silence before the first sign of life reappears: a desert bird, drawn to a hard, dried-out fruit resting near the wreckage.

Forced back into function by nothing more than sunlight hitting its exposed solar panel, the machine begins repairing itself, sparks and static standing in for a pulse.

A small hesitation before an old instinct kicks in: for a system that has never registered a living thing before, deciding to reach past it is the first real choice it makes.

A single seedling, rooted in the puddle of fluid leaking from the machine's own damaged frame: the first quiet trace of the life its repair is unintentionally feeding.

Piece by piece, the machine rebuilds itself, dragging its own weight free of the wreckage it was left in.

Rebuilt, but changed: the machine no longer moves like a weapon. It moves like something learning to exist for a different reason.

Where a torn cable once leaked the last of its fluid, flowers now grow through the metal: the wound becoming the root system of something new.

The cost of its second life: the plant that sustained its repair withers completely, its last moisture spent, just as the machine is finally made whole again.

The bird returns to a place that has changed entirely: grass, flowers and quiet where there was once only sand and wreckage.

The film's closing image: armor plating and machine parts absorbed into the trunk of a living tree, war and growth fused into a single, quiet monument, with an entire oasis blooming around it.

A glimpse at what the protagonist really was before the story singled it out: one identical unit among an endless, mass-produced army, a quiet reminder that its awakening was never guaranteed, and could just as easily have never happened at all.

A closing image built to echo Michelangelo's Creation of Adam: not a god giving life to man, but one machine reaching toward another, the spark of awareness passing hand to hand rather than being granted from above.

John Lim handled main character modeling, editing and post-production, sound design, story development, b-roll and credit shots, and render production. The rest of the team handled 3D environment and asset modeling, scene staging, layout, animation, visual effects, and project management and coordination, with story development and visual consistency shared across the group. Project supervision by Christoph Schaufler and Patrick Proier.

Synthconscious follows a single war machine's path from destruction to awareness, using the quiet growth of an oasis around it to ask what separates a machine from something that has begun, however briefly, to understand itself.

Not rebuilt to fight again. Rebuilt to notice.
