Echoes in the Void
Voyager's golden record, and the silence that answers it
Echoes in the Void is a 3D animated short film about the journey of the Voyager probe and humanity's place in the universe. The film reconstructs iconic stages of the mission: the flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, culminating in the "Pale Blue Dot," woven together with historical NASA radio transmissions. At its center is the Golden Record on board the probe, carrying humanity's music, images and voices out into the void. Created as a semester project and realized collaboratively by three students.
Echoes in the Void: the film. In interstellar space, Voyager encounters an abstract, alien intelligence that interprets its message not through language, but through pattern, sound and structure: a reflection on the Fermi paradox, and on a message that ultimately returns to us as an echo of ourselves.
This behind-the-scenes video documents the creative and technical process behind the film: from concept development and modeling through animation, lighting and sound design to final rendering, with insight into the challenges, decisions and collaborative workflow behind the project.
Echoes in the Void was nominated for, and won, Best Animation at Media Madness: an FH-wide showcase of bachelor and master semester projects, with my team on stage to collect it.
The opening stretch of the film: Voyager's launch, grounded in warm, familiar light before the probe leaves Earth behind for good.
Reconstructed mission milestones: Voyager unfolding its instruments, passing Earth, and drifting by the outer planets on its way out of the solar system.
The moment of contact: an alien intelligence reaches for Voyager's signal, not with words, but with light, pattern and resonance.
Inside the encounter: an abstract, non-verbal intelligence rendered as pure structure and light, interpreting a message it was never designed to read.
On Earth, the story runs in parallel: mission control, transmissions, and the technology that first sent the message out.
The Golden Record itself: the emotional core of the film, carrying humanity's music, images and voices as its message to the cosmos.
The Voyager launch vehicle and probe hardware were the core of my contribution to this project: full 3D asset creation, texturing and look development, built up from raw geometry to the detailed, weathered surfaces seen in the final film.
Close-up studies of the launch vehicle's engine cluster, developed to hold up under tight camera framing: every panel line, bolt and material transition modeled and textured by hand.
The complete launch vehicle alongside the probe's protective shroud: built as a fully modeled, texture-ready asset for use across multiple shots in the film.
The finished result: full look development on metal, heat-scarred paint and mechanical detail, pushed to a level that could carry the film's most detailed close-ups.
John Lim contributed 3D asset creation, rendering and look development, editing and behind-the-scenes coverage, audio design and post-production, and story development. The rest of the team led animation, simulation and effects, scene staging and composition, render integration, and additional asset creation and audio support, with story development shared across the group. Guidance and project supervision by Alexander Wilhelm.
Echoes in the Void follows the Voyager probe beyond the solar system, turning the Golden Record into a point of contact with an unknown intelligence: a mirror for humanity's need to be understood, the limits of representation, and the fragility of Earth within an immense universe.
