Nightlight

Nightlight is a small toon-style architecture study: a nuclear power plant built on a floating half-sphere base, lit up at night like a Christmas ornament hanging in the dark. Smoke drifts from the cooling towers, floodlights and red blinking lights dot the structure, and a small ring of pine trees, office buildings and smaller support facilities surround the plant itself. Made in Maya during the winter semester of 2023, the same semester as Duality: a toon-shading exercise in making something as heavy as a power plant feel light enough to float.

Behind the scenes in Maya: from a gray block-out to lighting passes and the final night-time render, working through the scene piece by piece.
