Neon Hardware
Blue shadows, red signals, black leather
Neon Hardware is the third chapter of my close-up studies on airsoft replicas, and the most cinematic one so far. This time the subject is a fully equipped rifle replica, laid out on a black leather couch and lit like a scene from a neon-soaked thriller. Cool blue and deep red share the frame, and the result feels more like a still from a night-time film than a product shot.
Two light sources, two moods. A cold blue key light sculpts the metal surfaces and pulls the creases of the leather out of the dark, while red accents glow from the edges, lenses and small details, like warning lights on a dashboard. The contrast between both colors gives every frame its tension.
The camera stays close and lets the hardware become abstract. Knurled dials, rails, lenses and engraved markings turn into patterns and textures, while extremely shallow depth of field keeps only a sliver of each image in focus. The rest dissolves into soft blue and red light.
The final frame pulls back just enough to reveal the setting. The worn leather surface, the reflections on its folds and the replica resting in the shadows bring the series together into a single, quiet moment: the calm after the action, frozen in neon.
